If LeBron James signs with the Chicago Bulls, it will be the franchise's biggest day since Michael Jordan quit, writes NBCSports.com contributor Johnette Howard.
If LeBron James is half as smart as he’s always seemed to be, he’ll ignore that crazy talk that’s been flying around ever since the Chicago Bulls leapfrogged to the front of line to sign him with their draft-day salary dump of Kirk Hinrich. Sometime after he officially becomes a free agent at the stroke of midnight ET on Thursday, James should tell everyone he’s not afraid of no stinking legends, not even one as big as Michael Jordan’s.
The popular contention is James should bypass signing with Chicago — which is clearly the best destination for him to choose from a basketball perspective, along with Miami — just because Jordan won six titles with the Bulls and thus Jordan always will “own” Chicago. That’s a joke, right? Let’s see how much James is loved if he gives Bulls fans even one parade.
Besides, Butkus and Ditka and Walter Payton’s names still get mentioned lovingly around Chicago, don’t they? The fondness for the Cubs’ Ernie Banks endures and endures.
