The evening meal, which is eaten after sunset, marks the end of the daily feast Muslims partake in during Ramadan.

Macron and his wife joined King Mohammed VI, his wife Princess Lalla Salma, his daughter Princess Lalla Khadija and others for the Iftar meal at the King Palace in Rabat, Morocco, on Wednesday night.

The couple spent the night in Rabat before heading back to France on Thursday.

The visit to Morocco was the first by the recently elected French president to a North African country and aimed to strengthen the relationship between France and Morocco, including cooperation on security issues.

While in the country, Macron urged Qatar and its neighbors to talk directly, to defuse their tensions over alleged terrorism financing, and said he would step up diplomatic discussions with Gulf leaders in the coming days.
