Egypt’s deposed president Mohammad Mursi asked about military leader Abdel Fattah al Sisi’s resolve to run for president according to a leaked recording, obtained by the Egyptian daily news website al Watan.
In a conversation with his newly appointed defense lawyer Mohammad Selim El-Awa, Mursi can be heard probing for more information surrounding al-Sisi’s potential candidacy.
“Does he really want to be president?” Mursi asked El-Awa in the leaked recording.
“Would he leave the army?” Mursi added.
“He will [be president] God’s will,” El-Awa answered.
In the tape, Mursi, who was ousted from the presidency in July following a popular uprising, can be heard questioning Sisi’s chances of being overthrown.
“Doesn’t he fear a coup?” Mursi asked.
“Are they [the Egyptian population] going to organize a coup against him?” Mursi added.
El-Awa responded with a firm, “No.”
In the recording El-Awa also mentions that Mursi supporters and opponents should sit together in order to find an agreement and stop the turmoil in Egypt.
“What’s logical is that people sit together, talk and come up with a solution because without a solution,” there is no way Egypt will move forward, El-Awa said.
“I don’t care about the Brotherhood or Gen. Abdel Fattah al Sisi; what I really care about now is the country. We are losing the country,” he added.
At the end of the conversation, some of which has been censored, the ousted president complained about the lack of funds available to him in prison as well as the difficulties he faces on a daily basis.
“I don’t have money in my account, I need money so I can live,” Mursi said.
